Whalebone, the European cybersecurity company operating the DNS4EU Public Service, expresses its gratitude to the dns0.eu team for their valuable contribution to Europe’s digital-sovereignty and cybersecurity landscape. At the same time, Whalebone reaffirms its commitment to ensuring a trusted, privacy-respecting, and sustainable European DNS infrastructure through DNS4EU – and its natural next evolution, DNS4GOV.
Over the weekend, dns0.eu’s users noticed that its website had been shut down and was displaying only the following message:
“The dns0.eu service has been discontinued. We would have liked to keep it running, but it was not sustainable for us in terms of time and resources.
We recommend switching to DNS4EU or NextDNS.
We sincerely thank all our infrastructure and security partners who made dns0.eu possible.”
Thank You to dns0.eu
Whalebone extends sincere appreciation to everyone behind dns0.eu, a project that successfully demonstrated how European expertise can deliver secure, privacy-first DNS resolution. Their work has helped raise public awareness of digital sovereignty, privacy, and DNS-based protection across the continent.
“We want to thank the dns0.eu team for their contribution to the European cybersecurity community,” said Magdalena Krucka, DNS4EU Communications Manager at Whalebone. “Their work showed that secure, privacy-respecting DNS can thrive within Europe. DNS4EU builds on that legacy – a sustainable, transparent service aligned with EU law, operated for the public good, and backed by partners committed to openness and accountability.”
DNS4EU: A Trusted European Public Service
For users seeking a European, GDPR-compliant, and high-availability DNS resolver, Whalebone’s DNS4EU Public Service offers exactly that. Backed by the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, DNS4EU ensures that European users, institutions, and networks can rely on resolvers hosted entirely within the EU, operating under EU privacy and security regulations.
DNS4EU offers configurable profiles – from unfiltered DNS to protective and family-safe modes – giving users control over their balance of privacy and safety.
Addressing European IT Community Concerns
We recognise that the sudden shutdown of dns0.eu raised questions within the community regarding service continuity, data handling, and sustainability. DNS4EU addresses these concerns directly:
- Built for longevity – Backed by an EU consortium and designed by Whalebone for long-term sustainability.
- Transparent data use – Operates under GDPR, with only minimal anonymised telemetry.
- Optional filtering – Filtering profiles (e.g., for malware or child-safety) are opt-in.
Why Governments and Public Institutions Are Engaging
Across Europe, governments and national cybersecurity bodies are adopting DNS4EU technology through DNS4GOV – a national-level extension of the same mission.
- Compliance – DNS4GOV supports EU data-sovereignty and NIS2 Directive compliance by ensuring DNS traffic remains within European jurisdictions, under transparent governance.
- Security – DNS resolution is a key layer for cyber defence. By integrating DNS4GOV, national CERTs in Central Europe and ministries in Southern Europe have enhanced their ability to detect and mitigate phishing, malware distribution, and command-and-control (C2) traffic.
- Sovereignty – Governments see DNS4GOV as a crucial enabler of digital autonomy – ensuring that European citizens’ and institutions’ internet activity is not solely dependent on global providers outside EU oversight.
“Across Europe, governments are taking a closer look at how DNS infrastructure impacts national security, compliance, and sovereignty,” stated George Buhai, Government Liaison at Whalebone. “Initiatives like DNS4GOV allow national CERTs and ministries to protect their networks with the same proven DNS4EU technology – ensuring that essential services remain both secure and sovereign.”
The Road Ahead: Shaping the Future of Sovereign DNS Security
DNS4GOV represents Europe’s maturation in digital-sovereignty infrastructure. Where earlier initiatives proved the concept, DNS4EU and DNS4GOV now provide long-term, scalable, and transparent solutions for both citizens and institutions.
As the DNS4EU concept evolves, Whalebone continues to work with EU institutions, national CERTs, and government agencies to expand adoption of its DNS4GOV commercial offering. Mr. Buhai continued, “We’ve already seen national CERTs and ministries in Europe adopting DNS4GOV to strengthen their cyber-defence capabilities. This isn’t a separate commercial offering; it is the natural continuation of the DNS4EU mission to safeguard how Europe connects to the internet at every level, from citizens to critical infrastructure.”
Whalebone invites governments, public institutions, and critical infrastructure providers to join in the discussion around transparency, security, and sovereignty – in Europe and beyond – by joining the DNS4EU Stakeholder Group at https://www.joindns4.eu
