Two months after the successful June launch of the DNS4EU Public Service, European cybersecurity leader Whalebone reports strong adoption and engagement – and growing demand for its DNS4GOV commercial offering for governments, public institutions, and critical infrastructure providers across Europe and beyond.
Led by Whalebone – in partnership with 13 organisations from 10 countries – the European Commission’s DNS4EU initiative not only successfully established a trusted, sovereign alternative to non-EU DNS providers, but it brought about significant interest in Whalebone’s protective DNS solution for governments and critical infrastructure, DNS4GOV.
16 Million Threats Blocked Daily – and Counting
Since its June launch, the DNS4EU Public Service now blocks around 16 million malicious domains daily – consisting, for example, of command and control (C&C), malware, and phishing attacks, with malware being the most prevalent, making up just over 70%.
As well, the service has attracted interest across Europe, earning coverage in leading technology outlets and sparking dialogue in forums devoted to privacy, security, and open internet. Feedback from stakeholders – including national CERTs, EU agencies, and independent experts – has reinforced the value of a voluntary, transparent, and privacy-respecting DNS service operated entirely within the EU.
The CEO of CAIRO AG stated in a LinkedIn post, “DNS4EU is designed from the ground up according to the principles of the GDPR. IP addresses are anonymised, personal usage data is not stored, and all DNS queries remain entirely within the EU infrastructure.”
Building on the momentum of the DNS4EU Public Service launch, Whalebone’s DNS4GOV solution is already being evaluated or deployed by multiple government agencies seeking enhanced security, privacy, and sovereignty in their DNS infrastructure.
“The overwhelmingly positive response to DNS4EU shows that Europe is ready to take control of its critical internet infrastructure,” said Richard Malovic, CEO of Whalebone. “With our Whalebone DNS4GOV commercial offering, we are equipping governments with a secure, compliant, and future-proof DNS service that protects institutions and citizens alike.”
The Rise of DNS4GOV: Securing Governments and Critical Sectors
Building on the success of the public service, Whalebone’s DNS4GOV has rapidly become a focal point for government agencies seeking enhanced DNS security, compliance with EU data protection laws, and alignment with digital sovereignty objectives for national security.
Developed as part of DNS4EU’s mandate to deliver a commercial-grade Protective DNS (PDNS) service, DNS4GOV offers:
- Advanced threat protection – Stops malware, phishing, and botnets at the DNS layer.
- GDPR-compliant operation – All data stays within the EU.
- Customisable policies – Adaptable to national or regional requirements.
- Scalable architecture – From single ministries to nationwide deployments.
- Regulatory alignment – Simplifies compliance with EU cybersecurity and data protection frameworks.
Several European governmental bodies are already piloting or deploying DNS4GOV, and interest has extended beyond the EU to partner institutions in other regions that might be seeking a proven, sovereignty-respecting DNS-based cybersecurity solution.
Guillaume-Jean Herbiet, .lu Service Technical Manager at Restena, explained, “We needed a solution that can catch, for example, phishing campaigns mimicking a local bank or authentication service.”
“Government and Public sector agencies need more than just basic DNS resolution, they need secure and sovereign infrastructure they can trust,” added George Buhai, Government Liaison at Whalebone. “The momentum in discussions and pilot programs that we’ve seen since June proves that our vision resonates far beyond the EU.”
Shaping the Future of Sovereign DNS Security
As the DNS4EU concept evolves, Whalebone continues to work with EU institutions, national CERTs, and government agencies to expand adoption of its DNS4GOV commercial offering.
Whalebone invites governments, public institutions, and critical infrastructure providers to join in the discussion around transparency, security, and sovereignty – in Europe and beyond. You can engage with Whalebone Government Liaison George Buhai from 24-26 September at Virus Bulletin Conference 2025 in Berlin, Germany – or reach out to Mr. Buhai via LinkedIn.
